Why this Wilderness?

Are you wondering what God is doing in this season of your life?  Have you ever asked the question, “When God, when?” If you’re like me, I suspect you’ve at least asked, “Why?” I can’t say that I’ve always received an answer, but recently I  heard a comforting message from a well-known bishop that helped shed some light on a few things for me.  He said, “The wilderness is designed to kill the unbelief in you.”  Hmmm…. I would add that the wilderness can also produce  patience in you. Yes, patience!  Think about it.  The Word says in Ecclesiastes 3:3, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:”   This scripture indicates that our days are numbered by God.  He is in control of the seasons of our life. If you find yourself in a dry season or maneuvering a wilderness experience, rest assured that you will not leave that place until God determines  that what He desires to work either in or out of you has been accomplished.   You can try to get out sooner, but trust me.  There are no quick exits.  I’ve tried.  I tried to reason with God.  I threw temper tantrums.  I had pity parties.  (I’m real good at those!) After some time, I realized that nothing was working.  That’s when I surrendered and allowed God to work in and out of me what He desired.  Patience has emerged as one of the fruits of my wilderness experience.  I’ll share this funny story with you as an example of patience being birthed…..

Not long ago, I was in line behind a lady who was writing a check (are you kidding me!) to pay for her groceries. I chuckled to myself. Normally,  I would have been so annoyed at having to wait the extra minutes (hey, doesn’t everyone use a debit or credit card to pay for their purchases!).  I noticed that I wasn’t annoyed at all; only amused to see someone writing a check at the grocery store.  In this age of technology, I hadn’t seen check writing in a long time!  This may seem like a small thing to you, but I recognize it as growth!

If you’re  in a dry season or maneuvering a wilderness experience, it may  feel to you in the natural that nothing, I mean nothing is moving at all.  Your dreams and desires seem years away.  Depending on the length of time you’ve been waiting, you may start to wonder if the dream even originated from God!  I know the feeling.  I’ve been there too.  If you find yourself on your way to the Devil’s pity party, shut it down!  Don’t go there.  Put on some praise and worship music and read scriptures that anchor your faith and remind you of the goodness of God.  Trust that God knows what He’s doing, and  don’t isolate yourself from other believers.  (Satan loves to get you by yourself so he can talk crazy to you!) God sees the end from the beginning.  Stay obedient to the Word of God and remember that He is in control.  God has great and mighty plans for you!

Meditate on this: “For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” –Jeremiah 29:11.
